QIA Mourns the loss of Kinngait Community Director Mrs. Martha Jaw
Iqaluit, Nunavut – February 20, 2026 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) extends its condolences to the family and friends of our late Community Director for Kinngait Mrs. Martha Jaw.
Mrs. Jaw was first elected to the QIA Board of Directors in 2022 and served nearly four years for the Kinngait Community.
With her time as Kinngait’s Community Director, she’s advocated for community freezers which was later implemented and completed, had strong impressions for the QTC’s recommendations and relocation for Inuit which also has been implemented and under completion with the finalized QTC recommendations.
“Mrs. Jaw has done a great job representing her community of Kinngait, I am thankful for her strong leadership, advocacy, and the time she was able to spend with QIA” said QIA President Olayuk Akesuk
Mrs. Jaw was a community health representative, as side from advocating for her community her other priorities were spending time at home with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
We recognize the profound loss this represents not only for the family, but for colleagues and community members who worked closely alongside them. Their guidance, kindness, and steady leadership will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
QIA stands with the people of Kinngait during this difficult time. We honour the life and service of our colleague and offer our heartfelt sympathy to all who are grieving.
