QIA Mourn the Passing of Paul Amagoalik
Iqaluit, Nunavut, July 13, 2026 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and community of Paul Amagoalik, a respected Inuit leader whose decades of service helped advance Inuit rights, opportunities, and self-determination throughout the Qikiqtani Region.
Paul was involved with the organization from its early days as the Baffin Regional Inuit Association, during a time when Inuit were organizing politically and working toward a stronger voice in decisions affecting their communities. He remained committed to Inuit leadership and continued to serve through the transition from BRIA to QIA.
As a longtime representative for Resolute Bay, Paul served in various leadership roles, including many years as a QIA Community Director. Throughout his service, he worked to advance opportunities for Inuit, including employment, training, and economic benefits that would strengthen communities across the Qikiqtani Region.
Born aboard a ship carrying Inuit families relocated from Northern Quebec to the High Arctic, Paul’s life reflected the resilience and strength of Inuit. He remained deeply connected to his community and encouraged young Inuit to become involved in leadership and public life to help shape the future of Inuit.
“Paul Amagoalik dedicated many years of his life to serving Inuit and strengthening our communities,” said Olayuk Akesuk, President of QIA. “His leadership, experience, and commitment to Inuit will be remembered with gratitude. On behalf of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, I extend my sincere condolences to Paul’s family, friends, and everyone mourning his loss.”
QIA extends its heartfelt condolences to all those mourning Paul’s passing.
