Iqaluit, NU, July 24, 2025 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to Virginia Mearns, on her appointment as Canada’s new Arctic Ambassador.
It is with both great pride and sincere sadness that we share this announcement. For the past four years, Virginia has served as QIA’s Senior Director of Inuit Relations, providing steadfast leadership and strategic advice on key initiatives including the Mary River Project and the implementation of the Revenue Allocation Policy.
Virginia’s deep understanding of Inuit priorities, her exceptional insight into government processes, and her steady leadership have made her an invaluable part of QIA team. Her work has helped shape policy and advance initiatives across numerous QIA files, always grounded in a commitment to Inuit self-determination and well-being.
The role of Arctic Ambassador is a pivotal one, charged with advancing Canada’s interests and leadership in the Arctic region. In this capacity, Virginia will support the implementation of Canada’s Arctic and Northern Policy Framework, foster trade opportunities, and promote Canada’s leadership in Arctic science and diplomacy. She will represent Canada in multilateral forums such as the Arctic Council, engaging with international partners in places like Alaska and Greenland.
Virginia’s appointment is a milestone achievement—not only for QIA and Nunavut but for all Inuit and Canadians. Greenland only recently appointed its first Inuk Arctic Ambassador, and we are proud to see Canada follow with the appointment of such a capable and passionate Inuk leader.
While Virginia’s departure marks a tremendous loss for QIA, we cannot imagine a more dedicated, and visionary representative of Canada in the international arena. Her longstanding experience with government, Inuit organizations, and volunteer work—combined with her strong ties across the Arctic—will serve her well in this important role.
