Tenure: Indeterminate
Location: Rotational Work at Mary River Mine
Open to: Inuit Applicants Enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is seeking an On-Site Environmental Monitor for the Mary River Mine Project, working a rotational schedule of three weeks on and three weeks off, with 12-hour shifts and travel by charter flight. The Environmental Monitor is responsible for observing and reporting on Baffinland’s activities and their environmental impacts, working closely with other QIA monitors and Baffinland’s Environment Department to support monitoring programs. The role involves providing first-hand reports to QIA and communicating observations to community members to enhance understanding of the project. As part of QIA’s Lands and Resource Management Department, which oversees activities on Inuit Owned Lands (IOLs) in the Qikiqtani Region, Environmental Monitors serve as front-line staff responsible for land management and compliance monitoring, reporting directly to the Manager of Project Compliance to help ensure responsible development and positive outcomes for Inuit.

The Environmental Monitor works on a rotational schedule at the Mary River Project southwest of Mittimatalik, Nunavut. Staff working at the project are flown via charter from their home communities. The position works directly with QIA staff in Iqaluit to monitor activities and their impact on the environment around the Mary River Project. The Environmental Monitor improves the flow of information from the Mary River Project to QIA through timely reporting of environmental impacts and responses. This function is critical to the ability of QIA to address and respond to compliance-related issues, requirements and concerns. The position requires identifying and helping to solve land use problems that will involve both general and environmental compliance with lease and permitting provisions. Advice and recommendations should be based upon Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit as well as relevant regulatory tools and laws.

Applicants should have an awareness of the political, social and economic environment of QIA, be knowledgeable of the Nunavut Agreement especially as it pertains to land access, use and environmental protection and have knowledge of applicable territorial and federal environmental legislation.  Fluency in Inuktitut is a strong asset and willingness to work rotationally at a fly-in/fly-out mine site is required.

A combination of relevant education and related experience is also an acceptable equivalency.  An acceptable Criminal Record Check and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The starting salary for this position is $94,003 per annum, plus a Northern Allowance of $28,925 per annum if the employee resides in Nunavut. Housing is not provided.
