The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is excited to share that 21 new homes for Inuit will be built in four of our High Arctic Communities: Arctic Bay, Clyde River, Grise Fiord, and Pond Inlet.
This is just the beginning. These homes are part of a larger, long-term plan to bring more Inuit-led housing to every Qikiqtani community by 2030.
What kind of homes are being built?
These new homes are designed with Inuit families and lifestyle in mind. Each one is a single-family home, approximately 1,700 square feet, with open layouts and thoughtful features:
- Open-concept living spaces to host family gatherings and community events.
- Cold porches for storing hunting gear and outdoor supplies.
- Dedicated areas for country food—to prepare, clean, store, and share harvested wildlife.
To deliver the largest homes within the defined budget, the homes are being built using modular construction methods. They are manufactured in Ontario, shipped in large segments by sealift, and then assembled in each community.
How many homes are coming?
The first phase includes 21 new homes:
- 8 homes in Pond Inlet
- 5 homes in Clyde River
- 5 homes in Arctic Bay
- 3 homes in Grise Fiord
Building supplies have arrived by sealift and construction will begin soon.
A new way forward for Inuit housing
QIA is working closely with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) on this initiative as part of the Angirratsaliulauqta – Nunavut Inuit Housing Action Plan. This plan focuses on providing safe, culturally appropriate, and affordable housing for Inuit, beyond the existing social housing system offered by the Nunavut Housing Corporation.
Funding for these 21 homes was provided through NTI and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Together, QIA and NTI are committed to building new homes in every Qikiqtani community by 2030.
