The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to fill the position of Director, Strategic Communications. This position is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies, overseeing media relations, supporting public engagement, and ensuring clear and effective communications across the organization.
Reporting to the Assistant Executive Director, the Director, Strategic Communications leads QIA’s communications activities and supports the organization’s efforts to keep Inuit informed about programs, services, initiatives, and advocacy work. The Director provides strategic advice to senior leadership, develops communication plans and materials, oversees social media and public relations activities, and supports the preparation of speeches, presentations, reports, and other communications products. The position also oversees QIA’s Interpretation and Translation team and promotes the use of Inuktitut within the workplace and in public communications.
We’re looking for:
- Exceptional communication skills in English and Inuktitut;
- A strong writer who can translate complex issues into clear, engaging messages;
- 5 years of progressive leadership experience in communications, media relations and public engagement initiatives;
- Performance management experience, including work planning;
- Is a strong leader who can mentor staff, manage projects, and build collaborative relationships;
- Understands Inuit organizations, the Nunavut Agreement, and issues affecting Nunavut Inuit.
This role works closely with departments across QIA, community organizations, government partners, and media outlets to strengthen relationships and support organizational priorities. Occasional travel throughout the Qikiqtani Region and Nunavut is required. A satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
This position generally requires a university degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field. A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered an acceptable equivalency.
Starting salary for this position is $186,368 to $223,539 per annum plus Nunavut Northern Allowance of $27,600/annum.
Vacation Travel Allowance (VTA) is also provided. Housing is not provided.
