This summer, nine modular homes will be shipped to Igloolik, with installation scheduled to begin in the fall. These homes are part of QIA’s ongoing work to increase access to affordable and culturally appropriate housing for Inuit families across the Qikiqtani Region.
QIA is currently delivering 21 modular homes in Arctic Bay, Clyde River, Grise Fiord, and Pond Inlet, with construction expected to be completed by fall 2026. Once construction is complete, the homes will be transferred to Igluvut, to own and manage. Igluvut, meaning “Our Homes,” is a newly established not-for-profit housing corporation. I nuit will be able to apply to live in these homes. Igluvut will share more information about who can apply, the rent, and future plans once the details are ready.
This work is being completed as part of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated’s (NTI) Angirratsaliulauqta – Nunavut Inuit Housing Action Plan.
Together, these 30 new modular homes are designed to better meet the needs of Inuit families and northern living conditions. Each unit includes features that reflect Inuit lifestyles and daily realities in Nunavut communities, including:
- Large open-concept living room and kitchen areas, allowing space for multigenerational family gatherings and food preparation
- 5 bathrooms to support larger families
- Detached house with room for hunting and harvesting equipment outside
- Cold porch / vestibule providing space to store outerwear and harvesting gear
- A dedicated cutting and storage room located off the main vestibule, complete with a durable steel cutting table and metal work surface designed for preparing and handling country food
- Three bedrooms, 1700 sq ft
- Rear entry for practical household access during winter conditions
In addition to supporting Inuit lifestyles, the homes are also built to work well in Arctic weather and to handle the challenges of being transported and constructed in Nunavut.
QIA looks forward to seeing these homes take shape in Igloolik and other High Arctic communities, and to continuing this work to expand Inuit-led housing solutions across the Qikiqtani Region.
