Clyde River’s Nauttiqsuqtiit recently hosted a firearms safety course and small engine repair program. Over the two-day firearms safety course, 12 community members learned firearms safety practices including safe handling and storage as well as proper operation of the firearm. QIA hired Polar Outfitting to teach an eight-day small engine repair workshop, providing 12 participants to learn to maintain their hunting equipment. The participants worked on snowmobiles belonging to community members and learning basic maintenance skills.

Thanks to funding through the Tallurutiup Imanga Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement’s On-the-Land Programs, QIA hired Polar Outfitting to deliver a small engine repair program in Pond Inlet this spring. The Nauttiqsuqtiit supported Polar Outfitting in teaching 12 community members how to maintain their hunting equipment. The participants worked on and fixed 20 skidoos, included those used by Nunavut Quest support teams.
Through this funding, Pond Inlet was equipped with a diagnostic computer which will continue to help community members maintain their machines.

This spring, the Clyde River Nauttiqsuqtiit built a cabin for community use. The cabin supports community activates such as harvesting, monitoring, and other on-the-land activities and also serves as a community emergency shelter. Thank you to our Clyde River crew for providing a safe space to support their community. The cabin construction was funded through the Tallurutiup Imanga Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement.

QIA's pre-trades training program just finished up in its third community with seven trainees in Pond Inlet completing ten weeks of pre-trades training. These trainees now have the opportunity to work for NCC Development on the QIA Research and Training Centre being built in Pond Inlet.

This training is part of the High Arctic Trades Training program. Through Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation and Kakivak Association funding, QIA offers a pre-trades training program before construction begins on our infrastructure projects. This provides an opportunity to complete training and then immediately be hired to help construct a new QIA building in your community.

Congratulations to the Pond Inlet trainees!

Pond Inlet’s Nauttiqsuqtiit recently hosted a five-day fishing camp, teaching 21 youth how to safely fish through the ice. Nauttiqsuqtiit supervisor Eric Ootoovak and Nauttiqsuqtiit crew supported the youth while they drilled holes in the ice, jigged for fish, set nets under the ice, and cleaned their catch. The youth also learned how to make niksik and experienced harvesting seal. The catch from this camp was shared with the community. Thank you to Pond Inlet’s Nauttisqutiit, Elders, and school staff who made this amazing experience for the youth possible!

Community engagement is a large part of the Nauttiqsuqtiit programing. Recently in Arctic Bay, participants took part in a net making program. Instructor Salmo Inutiq taught the group how to repair damaged nets and to add floats and lead weights onto a 200-foot net.
Teaching traditional skills to support harvesting is important to QIA and the Nauttiqsuqtiit. Thank you, Salmo, for sharing your knowledge in Arctic Bay!
