The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) concluded its annual spring board of director’s meetings in Iqaluit on Saturday June 8, 2013 as

scheduled.

At the board meetings topics that were discussed include: President’s report; QIA bylaw amendments; Mary River Project updates; Qikiqtani Truth Commission thematic reports and implementation plan; 2012 elections report; Reports from QIA’s subsidiary companies: Qikiqtaaluk Corporation and Kakivak Association; Board and Committee nominations and appointments; Organizational planning; Secretary‐Treasurer’s Report, Financial reports; and Departmental reports.

The board members were fully briefed on the Inuit Impacts and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) Agreement‐in‐Principle (AIP), which is still in under negotiations, to provide an understanding of where things stand to date. The IIBA is still in negotiations. Once an AIP has been reached between QIA and Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, QIA will present the IIBA to the impacted communities and work closely with the communities to develop a QIA Resource Revenue Policy.

Towards the end of the board meetings, QIA hosted a successful community feast including caribou, seal, narwhal, fish and geese to thank Iqalummiut for their hospitality. First Air and Canadian North generously donated two airline tickets each in celebration of the feast which were given out as prizes during the feast. QIA gave out free Inuktitut book to community members during the feast that it was able to fund through the QIA Community Initiatives Program and third party funding from Canadian Heritage.

“It was wonderful to see kids so excited about the Inuktitut books at the feast. I’m proud of the quality books that we are able to help produce to promote Inuktitut and literacy in our Qikiqtaaluk communities,” concluded Eegeesiak.

The board of directors will be having their Annual General Meeting later this fall in October.
