Public Notice: QIA inspection of cabins on Inuit Owned Land near Iqaluit

 In Blog

Please be advised that the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) will be conducting routine land inspections near Iqaluit during April 2020 in accordance with our responsibility to safeguard the land, waters and resources that sustain our communities.

The main purpose of these inspections will be to determine who owns non-registered cabins on the land. Further, we are looking into the extent of land use, adequacy of fuel and material storage and conditions of cabins to determine if any sites need to be cleaned up.

During this process, QIA will be seeking information about cabin ownership on Inuit Owned Land in Iqaluit. It is our goal to have every cabin owner complete a lease application and agree to terms and conditions designed to protect our environment. Having information on hand about cabin locations will also help in the event of an emergency.

QIA will make every effort to avoid disturbing your quiet and peaceful enjoyment of the land. QIA staff will also be taking precautions to respect social distancing in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We will not walk into your cabin or meet with you in person. We do ask that you contact us via email for any inquiries or to register your cabin.

QIA is asking that all cabin owners on Inuit Owned Land contact our office to share your cabin location and to start the leasing process if that is not already in place.

** Please note: the leasing process will be at no cost to Inuit applicants. **

If you have any questions about this activity, you may contact QIA at registry@QIA.ca and refer to the cabin inspection notice.
