Iqaluit, Nunavut – November 15, 2021 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association is pleased to welcome dog teamers from across the region for the first ever Qimuksiqtiit Regional Gathering taking place in Iqaluit from November 16-18.

“QIA is thrilled to finally bring together dog teamers for this important event,” said QIA President Olayuk Akesuk. “To be able to connect and share knowledge, we hope to inspire the next generation of dog teamers amongst Qikiqtani Inuit.”

The Qimuksiqtiit Regional Gathering will bring dog teamers together for the first time where they can celebrate and learn from each other.

The gathering is a direct result of hard work stemming from the Qikiqtani Truth Commission. On August 19, 2019, the Government of Canada finally issued a formal acknowledgement and apology to Qikiqtani Inuit for colonial policies and practices from 1950 to 1975. $2.9 million dollars has been made available for Qimmiit revitalization programming over the next seven years across the region.

The full schedule of events can be found on the QIA website.
