EVENT: QIA seeks community input on Tallurutiup Imanga interim management plan

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is conducting meetings with five Qikiqtani communities on the interim management plan for the proposed Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA).

A team from QIA, the Government of Nunavut and Parks Canada will be hosting community meetings in Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord in June. Our team will be meeting with hamlets, Hunters and Trappers Organizations, Community Land and Resources Committees, Joint Park Management Committees, youth in high schools, Indigenous Knowledge Working Groups and hosting open houses for community members.

This is part of overall community meetings taking place in the five coastal communities. Meetings in Pond Inlet and Arctic Bay were completed in May. Meetings in Clyde River will be scheduled in early July.

These meetings are a follow-up to the Tallurutiup Imanga Feasibility Assessment Report completed in February 2017. They will provide an opportunity for the communities to see how their input during the consultations for the Feasibility Assessment report was used and how it influenced the outcome of the report.

The open houses will also be an opportunity for QIA, Parks Canada and the Government of Nunavut to get feedback on the Tallurutiup Imanga interim management plan and to gather input from community members about community issues, challenges and opportunities related to managing this proposed National Marine Conservation Area.

The Tallurutiup Imanga Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) is scheduled to be negotiated with Parks Canada by March 2019.
