President Akeeagok Congratulates Mary Simon on her appointment as Governor General
Iqaluit, Nunavut – July 6, 2021 – QIA President P.J. Akeeagok extends his sincere congratulations to Mary Simon on her appointment as Canada’s Governor General.
“Today, I congratulate Mary Simon on this truly historic appointment. Her outstanding career advancing Indigenous and Inuit rights make her an ideal choice for the role of Governor General,” says QIA President P.J. Akeeagok. “I also acknowledge the important role President Obed of ITK played as advocate and advisor during the selection process, his leadership was instrumental in today’s landmark announcement.”
Mary Simon was born in Kangirsualujjuaq, Nunavik and among the important positions she has held include acting as a member of the Nunavut Implementation Commission, Canada’s first Ambassador for Circumpolar affairs, lead negotiator for the creation of the Arctic Council, ambassador to Denmark, and President of ITK.
Mary Simon has received many awards throughout her illustrious career including, the Order of Canada, National Order of Quebec, the Gold Order of Greenland, and the National Aboriginal Achievement Award.
