The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is committed to promoting and using the Inuktut language in our workplace, at meetings and engagements, in publications and on social media. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and skillful Inuktut language specialist who is passionate about Inuktut language promotion, protection and preservation.
The Interpreter/Translator roles at QIA are a key operational role within the Communications division of the Executive Management department. These roles provide translations and interpretation services to support the QIA administration of programs, service delivery and in achieving their overarching goals. The Trainee will be provided a valuable opportunity to develop their language interpreting and translating skills, while gaining practical experience necessary to take on the permanent role of Interpreter/Translator at the end of the training period.
Under guidance and mentorship of divisional staff, the Trainee will work on a variety of written materials including correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, advertisements, memos and other communications materials. The Interpreter/Translator position is responsible for responding to inquiries, promote the use of Inuktut language use in the workplace, compile Inuktut terminology and provide consecutive or simultaneous oral interpretations aloud, using electronic equipment, during meetings and events in both Inuktut and English. The Trainee will acquire skills in editing and proofreading and will ensure digital files and records of all translated materials are organized and accessible.
The incumbent is required to demonstrate a high degree of professional conduct, promote and adhere to QIA policies, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and maintain strict confidentiality. The Trainee is someone that works collaboratively and works well within a team. This position requires highly developed verbal, written, typed communication skills in English, Roman Orthography, and Inuktitut syllabics and has demonstrated ability and comfort in public speaking. Superb organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to stay calm under pressure at required skills for this role.
A diploma from the Interpreter/Translator Program is an asset. Related courses and relevant experience will be considered an acceptable equivalency. An acceptable Criminal Record Check is required.
Salary for the Trainee Interpreter/Translator role is $70,995/annum, plus a Nunavut Northern Allowance of $27,600/annum. The successful candidate will be offered the Interpreter/Translator position after successfully completing training. The starting salary for that role is $77,309/annum, plus a Nunavut Northern Allowance of $27,600/annum. Housing is not provided.
