Position: Protected Areas Governance Specialist

The Protected Areas Governance Specialist is responsible for Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s (QIA) coordination, and participation in Governance related to the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area, and Marine Protected Areas in the Qikiqtani region.

Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area was formally established in August 2019 with the signing of an Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) between QIA and the Government of Canada. Through the establishment of the Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement QIA realized the vision of Inuit leaders who have been seeking protection for these waters since the 1960s in the face of growing oil and gas development interest.

Reporting to the Protected Areas Governance Manager within the Department of Marine & Wildlife, the Protected Areas Governance Specialist, recognizing the fundamental importance of the protected areas ecosystem health and biodiversity to Inuit, will work in a manner that that is consistent with the Canada National Marine Conservation Areas Act, other federal legislation, and the Nunavut Agreement, while taking into account Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit recognizing that Inuit are integral to the health and protection of the marine environment. The Protected Areas Governance Specialist will work closely with Inuit and community organizations to develop an Inuit Advisory committee referred to as Imaq Committee.  The Imaq Committee is an Inuit advisory committee, which supports QIA with gaining perspectives of Inuit in the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area (TINMCA) communities, as well as to support QIA in the delivery of IIBA benefits and the overall implementation of the IIBA.

Applicants must demonstrate experience performing community engagement and facilitation of workshops or working groups. Strong leadership skills, well developed communication skills and interpersonal skills are needed for success in this role. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel and Power Point is essential. Knowledge of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, the Nunavut Agreement and familiarity with Inuit Impact Benefit Agreements is required in this role. One year of experience working in environmental protection or conservation in also required. Fluency in Inuktitut is a strong asset.  An acceptable Criminal Record Check and clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Generally, a diploma in Environmental Technology is required. A combination of relevant education and related experience may also be deemed an acceptable equivalency.

Starting salary for this position is $82,140 per annum, plus a Northern Allowance of $27,600 per annum. Housing is not provided. QIA offers pension enrollment and group health insurance, along with vacation travel assistance (VTA).
