Are you a reliable communication professional with highly developed Inuktitut and English language skills? The Interpreter/Translator is a key operational role within QIA, directly supporting organizational communications and ensuring alignment with QIA’s mission to advance the rights and benefits of Qikiqtani Inuit. This position plays an essential part in promoting the use of Inuktitut and facilitating clear communication internally and externally.

Reporting to the Manager of Interpreter/Translators, this position provides translation and interpretation services in both Inuktitut and English, promotes the use of Inuktitut in the workplace, and contributes to QIA’s communications initiatives. The Interpreter/Translator provides consecutive and simultaneous interpretation during meetings and at events and translates a variety of written materials, including correspondence, reports, and meeting minutes. This role also compiles terminology resources, maintains digital records of translated materials and promotes Inuktitut language across all QIA departments. Some duty travel may be required.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Fluency in English and Inuktitut, including roman orthography and Inuktitut syllabics;
  • Two years of experience interpreting or translating English-Inuktitut;
  • Experience drafting, proof-reading and editing informational or communications materials;
  • Demonstrated ability to speak at public events, with ability to remain calm under pressure;
  • In-depth cultural knowledge including Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit;
  • Ability to understand legislation such as the Nunavut Languages Act and the Nunavut Agreement;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.

Generally, a completed diploma in Interpreter/Translator is required.  A combination of relevant education and direct experience may be deemed an acceptable equivalency. An acceptable Criminal Record Check and clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The salary range for this position is $81,221 to $ 119,124 per annum, plus a Nunavut Northern Allowance of $27,600 per annum. Annual vacation travel assistance (VTA) is also provided. Housing is not provided.
