Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is the Designated Inuit Organization for management of Inuit-owned Lands (IOL) in the Qikiqtani Region. The Department of Lands & Resource Management (DLRM) ensures access to IOL is balanced with economic development, conservation and respect for Inuit land use within the Nunavut Settlement Area.
The Assistant Director represents a key operational role and functions as the lead project manager for the Department; this position is responsible for overseeing DLRM projects and programs, delegating duties and supervising staff. Reporting to the Director, this position will also support the development of policies designed to enhance QIA’s ability to administer present and future development projects. In addition, this position will ensure that the commitments and requirements of agreements and contracts with respect to major development projects, to which QIA is a party, are achieved in a timely and effective manner.
The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing the activities and performance of QIA staff and contractors in all areas of projects and programs related to management of Inuit-owned lands and the Mary River Project, which is a large-scale iron ore mining operation. These duties include developing work plans to ensure development, monitoring, compliance, and reporting on the project is done in a timely and efficient manner.
Success in this role requires knowledge of the political, social and economic environment of Nunavut, and awareness of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association mission, values and goals. Knowledge of the Mary River Project, the Nunavut Agreement and Inuit Impact Benefit Agreements are essential. This position requires strong leadership, coaching and team-building skill, along with the ability to analyze data and evaluate information. This role requires highly developed communication skills and the ability to communicate in Inuktitut is an asset. Applicants must demonstrate 5 years of experience in project management and 3 years of experience supervising and performance managing staff.
Generally, completion of a degree in Environmental Sciences or a related discipline is required. Project Management Certification is an asset. A combination of relevant education and related experience may also be deemed an acceptable equivalency. An acceptable Criminal Record Check is required.
The salary range for this position is $105,840 to $155,230 per annum, plus a Nunavut Northern Allowance of $27,600 per annum. Housing is not available.
