Under the direction of the Director of Marine & Wildlife, the Imaq Coordinator will be responsible for QIA development, coordination, and participation in Governance related to National Marine Conservation Areas, and Marine Protected Areas in the region.
Imaq shall be an Inuit advisory committee, which will support QIA to gain perspectives of Inuit in the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area (TINMCA) communities as well as to support QIA in the delivery of IIBA benefits and the overall implementation of the IIBA. Imaq will also provide advice on the development of strategies to facilitate the continuity of Inuit cultural uses, including traditional renewable resource harvesting, and protection of sites of special spiritual-cultural significance to Inuit.
Imaq may include the participation of Hamlets, HTO’s, CLARC’s, Inuit elders or Inuit Knowledge Holders. Imaq will be used to support the ongoing management of TINMCA. Imaq will contribute to the consensus-based governance model comprised of Inuit representatives and officials from the Government of Canada.
The Imaq Coordinator will be the point person for TINMCA IIBA Implementation, and governance considerations for marine protection in the region.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Combination of education and/or experience in a leadership role,
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with multiple stakeholders
- Experience in working with Nunavut communities
- Knowledge of land and waters surrounding Tallurutiup Imanga
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring and conservation issues
- Experience working with Federal Government, Nunavut Government, Hamlet Government, Community Organizations and Groups
Preference will be given to Inuit enrolled with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. in the Qikiqtani Region.
