The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) QIA is seeking a candidate that would like to develop skills in Geographic Information System (GIS).
The IQ and Informatics Trainee position will not only offer training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), it will also contribute to Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s focus on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit & Engagement in the Qikiqtani Region by gathering, analyzing, maintaining, and interpreting Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) related geospatial information and assisting in the planning, development and implementation of related policies, procedures, systems, and controls. This work is central to QIA’s mission of advancing the rights and benefits of Qikiqtani Inuit through protecting and promoting our social, political, economic, and cultural interests; while safeguarding the land, waters and resources that sustain our communities.
Reporting to the Research Manager in the Department of IQ & Engagement, the purpose of the IQ and Informatics Trainee role is to develop an understanding of GIS fundamental concepts and terminology including the role of GIS in business, government, surveying and natural resources. With this newly acquired knowledge the IQ and Informatics Trainee will assist in the planning, development, implementation, and control of IQ data management for the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA). This role will also be responsible for reviewing existing or incoming IQ data for accuracy, quality and completeness of documentation and must assure consistency with QIA standards and practices.
For success in this role applicants must demonstrate a commitment to learning, proficiency in computer hardware, software, and networking systems. Awareness and practice of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and a good understanding of the Nunavut Agreement is required. Applicant must have the ability to work effectively as a team member or independently and must have strong organization and time management.
The position generally requires a high school diploma. Course work in computer science is an asset. A combination of relevant education and related experience may also be considered an acceptable equivalency. An acceptable Criminal Record Check is required.
Starting salary for this trainee position starts at $59,822 per annum, upon completion of the required course work, the salary will be $69,026 per annum. Nunavut Northern Allowance is $27,600.
