Community Initiatives Program Funding Resumes

Iqaluit, NU – Qikiqtani Inuit Association is encouraging beneficiaries to start applying again to its Community Initiatives Program (CIP).

“The Community Initiatives Program was created by QIA in 2007 thanks to dividends from QC and Nunasi Corporation,” said QIA President, Okalik Eegeesiak. “The purpose of the CIP is to provide funding for projects that help address community and regional needs.”

The CIP funding criteria was revised by the QIA Board of Directors at the Qikiqtarjuaq meeting in May 2011. In order to allow for equal distribution of funds to the communities, the Board decided that each community will now be eligible
to receive up to $70,000 starting this fall.

QIA has been able to fund many on-the-land programs for Inuit to learn hunting skills, skin preparation methods and sewing skills. QIA is also extremely proud to provide funds for healing programs, high quality Inuktitut books; the Reclaiming the Woman Curriculum and many more projects.

“This program is truly making an impact in our region” said Vice President George Eckalook. “These impacts will have a long lasting effect even long after the projects have been delivered.”

CIP applications can be sent to QIA until August 31, 2011 by fax to (867)-979- 3238. Projects must take place after October 31 as the applications will not receive final review until the QIA Annual General Meeting which is scheduled for mid-October.
