QIA CELEBRATES INUKTITUT LITERACY MONTH

Iqaluit, Nunavut – February 1, 2017 – Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is proud to celebrate Inuktitut Literacy Month with a variety of events and initiatives.

“Keeping Inuktitut alive is key in preserving our culture and identity,” says QIA president P.J. Akeeagok.

“QIA wants to do our part to encourage young people to be proud of Inuktitut; we want to show that learning and using Inuktitut is fun.”

As part of Inuktitut Literacy Month QIA is launching a month-long campaign to promote and celebrate Inuktitut.

 

Inuktitut Literacy Month activities include:

QIA book showcase – daily throughout February

Each day in February QIA will introduce a different Inuktitut book published with the help of QIA funds on our social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). In addition, we will also share free digital download links for each book.

 

QIA president reads to children – Feb. 2

QIA president will do a reading to children at Tumikuluit daycare on Feb. 2 (event not open to media).

 

Book fair/exchange in lobby of Igluvut building in Iqaluit – Feb. 6 – (10am to noon)

QIA will showcase Inuktitut books published with help from QIA and handout free copies. Participants can come checkout our books or bring a used Inuktitut book they want to exchange.

 

Book signing with authors – Feb. 18 (1pm to 3pm)

The event is hosted in partnership with Inhabit Media on Feb. 18 and features a book signing with authors of Inuktitut books. More details to come.

 

Inuktitut song/poem contest – runs from Feb. 1 to 24 – winner announced Feb. 28

Participants are asked to share an original short song or poem (50 words or less) with QIA on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) using the hashtag #QIALIT. The winners wins $400, second place receives $300, and third place $200.

 

Word of the day – daily throughout February

As part of Inuktitut Literacy Month QIA is launching our new Instagram account @Qikiqtani_Inuit featuring our Words of the Day. This daily feature will help teach young people new words and phrases and help them in their efforts to learn Inuktitut and expand their language skills.
