The Youth Department is part of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA)’s Social Policy Department and is composed of two Regional Youth Coordinators who act as advocates for youth issues in the region. The primary function of the Youth Coordinator is to provide support, guidance and assistance
to the Baffin Regional Youth Council (BRYC) and to act as an information and resource centre for the youth of the Baffin region. The Youth Coordinators seek input from the youth in the region through the Youth Council and local Youth Committees to develop and deliver programs and services for the benefit of the region’s youth.
The Youth Department of the Social Policy Department was established in 1996 to deal with youth issues in the region and was allocated 1 staff person and a modest budget. Since its creation, the Youth Department has grown to 3 staff, operates with an increased budget and offers a number of programs and services for the benefit of youth across the region.
The primary functions of the Youth Department are:
- To provide support, guidance and assistance to the Baffin Regional Youth Council;
- To act as an information and resource clearinghouse for youth in the Baffin region; and
- To seek input from youth in the region (through BRYC and Local Youth Committees) and develop & deliver programs and services that benefit young people in the region
